How to prove your accident (no witness, no contact, hit-and-run)
For road accidents, French law strongly protects victims. But you still need to establish that a vehicle was involved — especially where there was no contact.
Build a body of evidence
- Photos and videos of the scene, skid marks, debris.
- Nearby CCTV footage (shops, streets) — ask quickly, it gets erased.
- Dashcam and your vehicle data.
- Written witness statements, with contact details.
- The accident report, and above all a police complaint in case of a hit-and-run.
The no-contact accident
A vehicle can be involved even without impact, if it played a role in the accident. But this involvement is not presumed: it is up to the victim to prove it, by any means.
Hit-and-run or uninsured driver
File a complaint quickly. If the driver remains unknown or is uninsured, the French guarantee fund (FGAO) may compensate your bodily injury, subject to conditions.
Secure your file early
The value of evidence is assessed case by case. Early support prevents decisive elements from disappearing.
